In the search for new bedding, “sateen” is an important word to understand: many brands use sateen as a main descriptor for fabric. Here, we break down what sateen is, how to care for sateen, why not to confuse sateen for satin—and what makes our sateen weave, Signature fabric, different and better.
What Is Sateen?
Sateen is typically a “four-over-one-under” weave (horizontal threads go over four then one under the vertical threads). Fabric made with a sateen weave tends to be breathable and offer beautiful movement.
Our Signature fabric features a sateen weave. To make the softest sheets imaginable, we made the highest quality threads from the finest long-staple 100% organic cotton on earth. It’s the sateen weave, though, that offers the iconic, buttery hand-feel that gets softer with every wash.
Sateen vs Satin
Most everyone has heard the term “satin,” and we often get the question of whether sateen and satin are related. Satin is a weave pattern. While the sateen weave provides a subtle sheen due to the way light catches the thread, satin has a hallmark glossy luster. Similarities end there. Satin is commonly made with silk, polyester, or rayon.
How to Care for Sateen Sheets
Sateen sheets can last many years if cared for and washed properly. To get the most out of your sateen sheets, you should wash them in cold water with like colors on a gentle cycle. Dry them on a low setting and iron them as needed.
We recommend avoiding bleaching your sateen sheets. Doing so may ruin their look and feel. Reference our laundry care guide for how to care for our Signature fabric.
Why You Should Choose Sateen Bedding
Sateen bedding is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for bedding that’s comfortable, stylish, and functional. For bed styling, sateen bedding drapes well and tends to wrinkle less than other bed fabrics. Its beautiful sheen lends sophistication to your bedroom. While fabric featuring this weave can be made from many different materials, at Boll & Branch, we only use 100% organic cotton for our Signature sateen fabric.
